Last days...

The lazy summer days are coming to a close around here. I return to work on Monday, so we are squeezing in all the fun times we can before it is back to our normal daily "school year" schedule. These are a few pics of the babes in their "Puddle Jumpers". They are THE BEST!!! I love them and the kids do, too. Rush gets the biggest smile on his face when he is floating on his own in the pool. SF is FEARLESS with hers on, so she still makes me a little nervous. Overall, though, they have been the answer to a much more peaceful pool experience for everyone. They will also be able to use them again next year!!

Fran keeps her mouth open the majority of the time she is in the pool. We are working on getting her to keep her mouth closed. :-)She LOVES to jump off the side of the pool. She goes under and pops right back up with her float on. I think she loves feeling her head go under. She comes up smiling (with her mouth open..ha!)!!

Gotta wear shades

July 2010

April 2009

My favorite thing about both of these pictures is that Rush's glasses need to be adjusted in both pictures, and Frannie's head is turned in the same direction/position in both pictures. Love these little stinkers!!!

A mess!

Things seem to be changing around here. I just told my Mama today that I feel like the tides have shifted or something. I used to be the one in control of the little people, but in some small way, I feel that things have kinda flip-flopped in the last few days. Could it be "terrible twos"? I refuse to think that my children could be described as terrible, but I would be willing to say that they are definitely pushing every button they can find right now. There has been fighting over toys, pushing, fit-pitching over a Publix balloon, and Rush even hit Sydney Frances yesterday in the kitchen. I am just not sure I am ready for this. I found myself standing in the Parenting and Family Life section at Books A Million today. When I walked in the door of the book store, they had a big display of _______ for Dummies books. I thought to myself (seriously).."Wonder if there is a Toddlers for Dummies or even better TWIN Toddlers for Dummies..." I didn't find a book that I wanted to guide me through this next phase. Truthfully, I am not the parenting book type. I am feeling like I need a little guidance here, though, so if you know of a good book that you have loved that deals with raising happy, loved, well-behaved toddlers, leave it for me in comments. I would be willing to give it a shot to help me feel better prepared for our next phase.

Just in case these subtle changes weren't enough, I walked into the twins' nursery on Wednesday to get them up after their nap. But, apparently, Rush no longer needs me for that because he was standing next to a table in his room making some adjustments to the CD player. Yes, I said standing outside his crib. Like, when he was supposed to be IN the crib, he was OUT of the crib. You can imagine my surprise. My initial reaction was not "OH MY GOSH.. Rush climbed out of his crib!!" Maybe I was just in denial. I had been in the back of my house, so I my initial thought was... "When did Phil get home and take Rush out of his crib?" You know, because that's what we always do... just let the kids run around in their room completely unattended. We encourage them to change CDs and press buttons and stick their fingers in the fan. I was so unwilling to believe that Rush could exit the crib on his own, that I believed Phil had come home from work in the middle of the afternoon without saying a word to me and taken Rush out of his crib. And then, I guess Phil just mysteriously left again. Of course, that is the only logical explanation. I am still somewhat in denial. This is a whole new ballgame. The crib was the one place that I was confident that no one could do any major damage. It meant I could take a quick shower or fold those last few shirts. Now, I am worried I will hear Rush in the den in the middle of the night bouncing the basketball or riding his four wheeler. I'll keep you posted on the sleeping situation.

Sydney Frances has also recently impressed us with her comedic talents. We went to visit my sister at the end of last week. We got back home on Friday evening, and the kids were eating dinner in their chairs in the kitchen when Phil came in from work. We hadn't seen him in a few days, so we had been talking about seeing Daddy when he got home. Usually when Phil comes in, it is a very exciting time. The kids are so glad to see him and get very excited. This time was different, though. When Phil walked through the door, the kids just froze and didn't say a word. See, Phil had gotten a haircut that is his "summer do". It is much shorter than he usually keeps his hair. (Almost a buzz cut, but not quite that short...) Anyway, much different. So, I think the new haircut really threw them off. Finally, our little Fran pointed at his head and said, "A mess." Of course, we found that quite hilarious. The kids just kept staring at him... which we found even more hilarious. Now, if you ask her about her Daddy's hair, she will tell you it is "a mess".

Our pictures for this post are from our visit with Aunt Ivy, Uncle Tony, and Kate. It was fun... hectic... but fun!! Having three kids there gave us a run for our money! Someone was always eating or sleeping! Ha! So basically, we fed kids and I told mine "NO!", "Stop that!", and "Go to time out" about 100 times. Again, the tides have turned.

We had some fun swimming with our buddy Carson and his Mama, Ashley. She is Ivy's best friend since they were five, and we love Carson and Ashley dearly. Carson would like for you all to know that "I do not like fireworks." He made us laugh.

Ashley took some beautiful pictures of the kids at the pool. I wish I had a way to post those, but if you are my FB friend, they are under photos of me. It makes me want to learn to use my new camera.

Syd was much more interested in "helping" with Kate this time. She is helping Aunt Ivy feed Kate her bottle.

We even got a picture of them holding hands!! Too bad SF was still cooling off after our trip to the park (see below). She's a little underdressed. :-)

There was an cool park near Ivy's house that had a wooden train where the kids has fun playing and peeking through the windows. Rush sat in a "big boy" swing for the first time since there was only one enclosed swing. He did great until the end. He fell out of the swing, but he recovered pretty quickly.

Finally, we will be giving our new Puddle Jumpers a try in the next couple of days. I am hoping this will be the answer to the problem we have had finding something appropriate for them to float in this year. It has been a struggle. They are very excited about the new things and keep saying "Pool" when they walk by them. :-)

The Zoo

We had such a fun trip to the zoo with some very good friends recently. My friend, Kristen and I, decided to load our kids up and take them to a zoo that is about an hour away. The kids really enjoyed it. Rush and Fran's friend, Avery, is such a sweet, sweet girl. My two just love her! We got there as soon as it opened that morning, and it was a wonderfully overcast day. Normally, overcast/nearly rainy day for a zoo visit would seem like a bad thing. Just live anywhere in the south in the summer to know that a cloudy day is quite the treat! Was it hot? YES, OH YES!! But, it could have been worse! We packed a picnic lunch and took it with us. The kids lasted a long time. We got there at 9:00 and didn't leave until around 2:00. No one even got a little bit cranky! :-) We will definitely go again sometime soon.

Seeing the monkeys for the first time

Loving the monkeys

Peeking in at the elephants...

Waiting for the giraffe to come over so we could feed it

Riding the train around the park

Rush enjoying his PB and J at lunch..

Rush, Frannie, and Avery dancing on the stage at the pavillion where we had our lunch... this was one of their favorite things all day. Kids are so funny!

They were doing this before we ever left the zoo parking lot. :-) A good kind of tired...

The Fourth of July

We had a great time last night at our city's Fourth of July celebration. We took our chairs, a picnic, a big blanket, and two cute kids to join the rest of the residents of our town for some fun. It was really crowded, so I was glad we got there early to get a spot near (but not directly beside) the band. I knew the kids would love the music. They started dancing immediately. The band played all songs that we knew. We walked down to let them see the men playing guitar, but we didn't stay long because it was LOUD! They had a man there making balloon animals, and the line for that was a MILE long. I was glad my two weren't old enough to get it and want to participate in that line!! Mainly, we just danced and Sydney Frances ate about 20 Wheat Thins. She loved those, and I don't guess she has had them before. Rush had a fit of giggles on the blanket while flipping around and trying to make himself fall on purpose. That led to some interesting pictures! We ended up trekking back to the car to watch the fireworks closer to our car so we could get the kids home a little faster after it was over. You could tell they were starting to lose steam around 8:30 or so. The fireworks didn't start until 9:00, so it was a late night for them. They were up until 10:00 or maybe even a little after which is incredibly late for them. They have never been up at that time since they have been sleeping all night. They were both great, though, depsite the late hour. Phil and I had to compose ourselves from hysterical laughter when the fireworks first started. We were in a church parking lot in a grassy area off to the side, so the twins were running around and playing. When the first fireworks started, they came charging to the blanket with a full look of panic on their faces. Sydney Frances was not a fan of the fireworks. She watched them glued to either my side or Phil's lap, but when we asked her if she thought the fireworks were pretty, she cried and said "Uh no." Rush loved them! Although, he did stay in my lap or Phil's lap the whole time. He did say "put-tee" (pretty) several times. It was a great night! Hope you enjoy the pictures!

I have figured out how to get both kids to stare at the camera when having their pictures taken. We will invite a random stranger to all photo sessions and family gatherings from this point on. Random, kind stranger took a few photos of our family together so we could all four be in the picture. Both kids stared at him the whole time! :-)
This sandwich played a big role in the night for Rush. See below.

This is Rush's sandwich from the picnic. He kept walking around with it after everyone else was finished eating, but I guess he got tired of holding it after a while. He kept tucking it in random little places. He tried Phil's cup holder on the chair. I finally found the remnants squeezed into the side pocket of my cute little monogrammed market tote. Boys...

In college, we had several cats, and sometimes they would just go crazy and run uncontrollably around the house. Rush behaved similarly last night on the blanket. He ate a bite of my brownie, so maybe it was the extra sugar?? Anyway, that little burst of energy led to the next few pictures. I think his giggles were contagious to all of us.

A trip to the park

I have learned this summer that too much inside time can tend to lead to some cranky kiddos. So, I have been trying to make an effort to look past the smothering heat to get the kids outside a little more often. We went to a local park earlier this week. They LOVED IT!!! We had the entire place to ourselves because we went early in the morning. (It was still VERY HOT!) We only stayed about 30 minutes because we had more errands to do. Poor Rush cried when we left because he was having so much fun. We will have to make another early morning trip.

We have had more summer adventures since our trip to the park... more to come on that later!
