Poolside Adventures

Do you ever have a vision for how something is going to be only to have it turn out NOTHING like you imagined? I have. Yesterday. In a pool. With twins.

So, it started like this. I wanted to be sure I was well-prepared for our trip to the pool. Several weeks ago, I purchased our brand new package of Huggies Swim Diapers in anticipation of our first swim! It just made me feel like summer was on the way to make that purchase in the those last days of the school year. Yesterday, I went to the friendly, neighborhood Wal-mart to purchase the spray baby sunscreen and new floats, etc. for our trip to the pool. This is our neighborhood pool that I am referring to. It is basically a backyard pool that everyone has to share. Nothing special, but it is wet and cool, so I always hang out there during the summer. Well, all summers before this one. Now, don't get me wrong. I knew I would not be sitting in the lounge chair reading the latest chapter of Twilight this summer. Those days are gone, and I understand that. What I did picture was cute babies in cute swimisuits and hats splashing with their Mama and Daddy while floating in their newly purchased "My Baby Float". These babies would be easily greased up with SPF 422, so their sweet baby skin would not get one trace of sunburn or irritation that is sun related. Oh, I even have these cute little robes that one of my students gave me last year before the babies were born. I thought that would be perfect to wrap the sweet little babies in after their very first swim. So, off we go!

I put sunscreen on the babies' faces before we went to the pool, but I planned to "spray" on the other sunscreen once we arrived because I didn't want to spray it all over my house. Seems like a simple plan, right? I mean, Phil was with me. I would just spray one baby while he held the other one. Like I said.. simple plan. Well, the new baby spray sunscreen had other ideas. Not only did it not spray, it came out in huge clumpy blobs all over Rush. He was less than thrilled. Phil tried to get it to work while I began slathering on the sunscreen from the bottle (OK.. in hindsight, I might have been a bit overzealous) to cover his entire little perfect baby skin. I even put a little extra on his face.. just to be sure. We put on his hat, and he was whisked away with Phil to try his first dip. Meanwhile, I slathered up Sydney Frances, and in the background I hear some wails coming from Rush. So far, he is not a fan. I got into the pool, and put Rush in his "My Baby Float". I am quite sure if we had actually been at the pool long enough, I would have had a claw mark sun tan from the slick little fingers of a nine month old clawing his way up me and out of "My Baby Float" while EXTRA COATED in SPF 422. He hated it! And I do mean hated it! I was all disappointed. Meanwhile, SF was busy dreamily floating in her "My Baby Float" because she LOVED IT!!! And I do mean loved it! She was lying back and kicking her little feet. I'm thinking to myself, "Thank goodness one of my kids likes the pool... gosh, what is wrong with Rush? It can't be that bad." Did I mention that I actually wondered what would happen if a baby pooped in one of those brand new Huggies Swim Diapers as I was putting them on the babies just a short ten minutes before? Did I also mention that I was perhaps a bit overzealous when putting on SPF 422? Well, now I know the answer to my diaper question. I also know the effects of how to NOT apply sunscreen next time. Namely, I should avoid apparently smearing it all in the 9 month old's EYES!!! I don't remember rubbing it in his eyes. I thought he wasn't opening them because it was so bright outside. I felt like TOTAL CRAP once we got the little booger home. I will not describe the diaper, but I will add that the only benefit of a swim diaper is that it doesn't swell. There is nothing dry about it. All wet! Allllll wet!! So, we will have to try again with the little guy when he does not have a diaper FULL of poop and eyes full of sunscreen. Although I am not sure he is going to be game. Last night when I put him in the Duck tub, he FLIPPED OUT. I think yellow Duck made him have a little flashback to yellow "My Baby Float." OH WELL! Every day is an adventure!

Getting ready to go in

Sydney Frances ENJOYING herself!

Rush during a rare moment of not freaking out (note.. closed eyes... hmmmm.. get a clue Mama.) They do have sunglasses, but I couldn't handle any more equipment at that time.)

What Rush looked like for most of the 10 minutes we were there

I think SF looks like her Aunt Ivy in this picture

This is what Rush looked like for the next two hours post-pool fun. Did I mention I felt like crap? Bad mama award here.

Today I am going to go and buy a small pool for our backyard where they can splash and play. I think that is a better option for us for now. We'll try the big pool again another time. I need that memory to leave Rush's short and long term memory before we make a second attempt.

Laura, I was laughing so hard at this post I was crying! Those swim diapers definitely retain water. . . I change Talia's at the pool so it doesn't leak everywhere!

We're going to the pool on Thursday, and I am already nervous! AM is ALL OVER the place, so it will be interesting to have two VERY mobile children with me. Not to mention all the gear I haul there! LOVE the pictures!

Funny, funny! Sorry your adventure wasn't what you expected! Didn't you get the "tear free" sunscreen? Hopefully Rush will forget his first swim experience! Kolin hated the pool his first few times and then learned to like it, so there's hope for the summer!

Zack has REALLY sensitive eyes, and it took a FEW times of his eyes getting all red and puffy for me to figure this out...so don't feel bad. I use the stick now because it doesn't drip or run or anything. Much better for him. The first time to the pool with kiddos is always hard, but in a few short years, you'll be able to read those chapters while they play a good game of "marco polo"!!! xoxoxo
